What You Need to Know About Curcumin for Dogs and Cats

Curcumin is a naturally occurring chemical compound that is found in the spice turmeric. The two words are sometimes used interchangeably, but the technical difference between the two is that turmeric is the yellowish powder used to flavor foods, while curcumin is a chemical contained within turmeric.

The distinctive color of turmeric is due to the high levels of curcumin it contains. Laboratory and animal studies have demonstrated that curcumin has potent anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties, reports an article published in 2007 in the medical journal Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology. Curcumin regulates chemical messengers that cause inflammation in the body, suggesting that curcumin may be particularly effective in treating autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Studies show that turmeric may help fight infections and some cancers, reduce inflammation, and treat digestive problems.

Turmeric has been used in both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine as an anti-inflammatory, to treat digestive and liver problems, skin diseases, and wounds.

Cancer
There has been a great deal of research on turmeric’s anti-cancer properties, but results are still preliminary. Evidence from test tube and animal studies suggests that curcumin may help prevent or treat several types of cancers, including prostate, breast, skin, and colon cancer. It is part of the Joe Tippens protocol that includes the dewormer Panacur, and some him treat Stage 4 Cancer.

Diabetes in Pets

Diabetes is becoming more common in pets, especially in cats. It seems to be almost epidemic in some areas, with many cats developing Type 2 or diet-induced diabetes. Diabetes can be triggered by inflammation.
In cases of Type 1 diabetes, inflammation may attack the pancreas, leading to scar tissue and reduced insulin production. Type 2 diabetes is often diet-related, with inflammation in the body preventing insulin from being used effectively.

One of the major triggers of diabetes in pets is inflammation, and that’s where turmeric comes in. A 2021 study found that curcumin significantly helped manage diabetes by: Decreasing fasting blood sugar,Reducing insulin spikes, Lowering body mass

Eye diseases. Uveitis, (Eye inflammation) and Dry Eye
A preliminary study suggests curcumin may help treat uveitis, an inflammation of the eye’s iris. Study here at Texas A and M
It is being used for Dry Eye in people and animals. Some pet parents have found it to be helpful for excessive eye tearing.

Neurodegenerative Conditions
Tumeric’s powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and circulatory effects may help prevent and treat neurodegenerative diseases. There is a ton of new research showing curcumin can decrease amyloid plaques in the brain. Benefits of Curcumin for Brain Disorders.

Allergies
In another study, ‘Immunomodulatory effects of curcumin in allergy.’, the authors stated this:
“The results indicate a marked inhibition of allergic response in animals treated with curcumin suggesting a major role for curcumin in reducing the allergic response.”  Consider it for your allergic pet.

Cushing’s Disease in Dogs
Cushing’s disease is often seen in middle-aged to older small breed dogs. It’s caused by a pituitary tumor that over-stimulates the adrenal glands, leading to excessive cortisol production. The symptoms include increased drinking and urination, a distended belly, a thinning coat, and increased appetite.
While conventional treatments for Cushing’s disease involve lifelong medication, one interesting study has shown that 95% curcumin can be an effective alternative. Research indicates that curcumin can: Decrease inflammation within the pituitary gland
Reduce the size of pituitary tumors,  Lower cortisol levels by inhibiting the production of ACTH (the hormone that stimulates cortisol release)

Longevity, Epigenetic Benefits
95% Curcumin is now considered a key nutrient for cell health, and ensuring that your dog or cat avoid many of the age related diseases. It is epigenetic in that it is a food ingredient which can modify what genes are expressed- if the correct genes are turned on many age related diseases can be avoided. The review study is this: Longevity and anti-aging effects of curcumin supplementation

Pain, Inflammation and Arthritis ( Degenerative Joint Disease)
In a recent review study: ‘Efficacy of Turmeric Extracts and Curcumin for Alleviating the Symptoms of Joint Arthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials‘ the authors concluded this:
“In conclusion, these RCTs provide scientific evidence that supports the efficacy of turmeric extract (about 1000 mg/day of curcumin) in the treatment of arthritis.”

I have personally used it for some nasty headaches, and it works well for me 🙂

P.S. In part the 95% curcumin is working for Tula – she is NOT on an NSAID, she is very active, eating well- she is on other nutrients as well, but the curcumin is clearly helping.

P.P.S. But the BIG problem with 95% Curcumin supplementation has been absorption. IF it is not absorbed, it can’t help. Give it with food, and especially fat- there is far better absorption. Also the formulation makes a BIG difference…

Dr. Jones’ Ultimate High Absorption 95% Curcumin (BCM-95® ~ Curcugreen®) with BioPerine® has marked anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. The supplement is in capsule form (powder in capsules). Each capsule contains 250mg Curcumin, with 30 capsules per jar.
