Dr Mel from Our Grounds : in response to this Question :
I had a C-section two months ago, and I’m currently breastfeeding. I’m looking for something natural to help boost and detox my body. Could you please recommend any suitable products?
Also, my baby has developed thrush on the tongue—do you have anything gentle and effective that you would recommend for that?
Additionally, do you offer any probiotics that are safe for me to take while breastfeeding, and possibly something suitable for my baby as well?
Response from Our Grounds’ Doctor Mel’s response :
“With regard to the question of detoxing ….
we take great care and a lot of discernment on this because we do understand that after a C-section there is surgical residue from anaesthetics and medications. There will be inflammatory stresses in the body. Post-natal hormonal recovery or re-calibration so to speak, is a process. It is not something that the body rushes. The body adapts and shifts as the mother feels safe and as she can cope with all of the different changes as a consequence of giving birth and that there is then soft tissue recovery and obviously the gut micro biome, which is really important.
So while the mom might feel the need to detox, the true post-natal detox during breastfeeding must be extremely gentle. It must also be non-purging and it needs to be harmonising because we can’t afford to release toxins into the breast milk because this will negatively impact baby’s gut.
So first things first – what we would say is : you don’t do a detox. What you rather do is do supporting foods and supporting nourishment, to support the body’s soft, gentle way of detoxing itself. You cannot use things like charcoal or zeolite or any of those type of detoxing herbs. It is better to actually get the body in motion, so doing dry brushing for soft, gentle lymphatic release and then rather encouraging a form of hydration, making sure that we focus on drinking water and that we drink very soft teas – nothing more serious than Rooibos and what a lot of people don’t realise, is that Rooibos is a gentle liver cleanser. It supports the adrenals and is exceptionally mineral-rich. It is perfectly safe for baby because if, in factual fact, we are unable to breastfeed and we don’t have access to milk powders, that we can actually nourish a baby to full term just with Rooibos alone.
No harsh teas like the dandelions and those senna teas etc – nothing like that. Just Rooibos and a little nettle leaf, which nourishes and supports kidney function and it actually helps to restore the post-partum iron levels, because mom could be quite anaemic as a consequence of the surgery and the process.
Another beautiful safe one is Rosehip tea. It is filled with Vitamin C – it is beautiful for immune and skin tissue repair and it’s actually going to also offer a little immunity to baby.

Other things that mom can do:
Breathing (so super important) – our lungs are the biggest detox organ, so when you go into deep beautiful exhales and inhales, you are actually detoxing the entire body and of course last but not least, walking, because a body in motion and a little sweat, helps the body to excrete.
Then if mom wants to support her liver health, she is more than able to work with Castor Oil Packs. That’s something she can do safely because it is on the body and that is going to help her liver detox very gently.
She can even use the warm Castor Oil on the scar tissue of the C-section. But nothing more than that.
Then beautiful soups and broths, foods that are nourishing that will support the body’s re-calibration and re-set. That is really important.
In terms of product safety and what mom can use, here is a simple recommendation:
100% the Raw Vegan Probiotic. It is so filled with beautiful live strains and it supports not only the gut diversity for mom, but it will be transmitted very subtly through the breast milk to baby and it will improve baby’s digestion. It will help baby’s immunity and it may even reduce colic.
So the Raw Vegan Probiotic is an absolute no brainer – it is such an easy thing – and not harmful to baby but is actually beneficial
And we have Belly Bugs (probiotic) – it is perfect for kids 0 to 12 as an example, but while mom is breastfeeding if she goes to work with the Belly Bugs – and Belly Bugs is there to actually support mild digestive issues and leaky gut – it targets strains for the lower gut repair and is really going to help with mom’s dysbiosis as a consequence of those antibiotics that were issued.
It is then also indirectly going to support the nourishment of the breast milk and also support baby’s beautiful rhythm.
Where we have big cautionaries is on Huff & Puff and the Bronchial Remedy. The Huff & Puff would be safer for a mom who is breastfeeding but we would actually say limit your use. In other words, you wouldn’t do multiple doses – you would do maybe once every second day to help your own respiratory system.
The Bronchi Remedy though, might cause indigestion for baby because there’s a lot of stronger herbs there and unfortunately that will also go back into the breast milk and can then cause a bit of disruption. If mom is chesty and not feeling well, then it would make sense to do some “steams” rather and some herbal compresses and foot baths rather than actually ingesting something that might then be transmitted back to the breast milk.
Last but not least, because mom has shared that baby has got thrush in the mouth – the first thing we have to ask is what else has baby been exposed to – a dummy : do you lick it yourself because your bugs go onto the dummy. If you are only breastfeeding and are not giving the baby milk from a bottle, then there should be no reason for baby to have thrush other than if you have thrush and are then passing it on. So your treatment would be similar to baby’s – a beautiful probiotic that you would have to procure. There is one you can buy in the wellness shops, but you would have to buy it separately because it comes encapsulated unfortunately and that is Acidophilus. One can just ask the pharmacist or the health professional there for a baby friendly version. What you would then do is just a tiny bit – no need for a lot – literally like 1/8th of a teaspoon which is pretty much a capsule – that you can either put into the breastmilk bottle if you are doing that for baby or you can rub that onto your nipples so you can take a little breastmilk, mix the Acidophilus in, put that on your nipples and then when baby latches on, baby is getting the benefit. You can do that for about 5-7 days. That will also nourish baby in a beautiful way. Acidophilus is also an AB culture which is very important. We normally get it from dairy but not from commercial dairy any more because of the pasteurisation and it’s there to treat anything from the mouth to the vaginal cavity.
It’s a very very special probiotic – it is yoghurt-like in its flavour profile and it matches the fluids of our body as the divine feminine.
Breastfeeding has many unknowns and even more with pregnancy and that’s why we have all of these cautions and yet there are a lot of beautiful remedies that are safe.
If baby has colic, go and do body stress relief because those poor little bodies are cramped up inside of mom – everything is buckled around, the nervous system hasn’t opened up properly and what we find often with body stress release is that within 2 or 3 sessions the colic goes away. We find the same with chiropractors who specialise in working with babies. They do one treatment, colic goes away, baby sleeps well and then of course what you eat matters. If you eat chillies, your baby is getting chillies! These are some of the things that parents don’t know.
Simplicity regarding any form of paediatric care – you just look at this tiny little form that you have created and you go “What would I want to feed this baby – would its body be able to handle chillies?”
No! Would its body be able to handle a glass of wine?
No! Everything you put in your mouth is going to, in one way or another, find its way into the breast milk.
So you want to really nourish yourself with beautiful fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, broths and soups.
No alcohol, no caffeine, no funny stimulants, no pharmacology. You want to keep it all as natural and whole as possible – then you are going to foster a beautiful healthy baby.
