In my year-long quest to detox my body and to take my health into my own hands, I’m exploring another one of those hidden gems – Borax. After much research and a keen understanding of what Borax really is, I decided to give it a try. First, let me tell you what it is.

Borax is also known as sodium borate, disodium tetraborate or sodium tetraborate. It is mostly mined from dried salt lakes in California, Turkey, Kazakhstan and the Tibet region of China and it is a naturally occurring mineral. Borax is the salt of boric acid. Borax is a compound containing boron, which helps to strengthen bones, whiten and strengthens teeth and detoxifies the body.

You may be familiar with 20 Mule Team Borax found in many grocery stores as it is used as an additive to laundry detergent, a cleaning agent,  a water softener, an insecticide and more.

Boron is derived from borax which is found in all naturally grown plants and unprocessed foods, but in low amounts because of the conditions of our soils and from our cooking and processing methods. Good diets usually provide 2-5 mg of boron per day. Borax is a crystalline salt where boron is the chemical element.

Health Benefits of Borax

  • It has antiseptic, antifungal, and antiviral properties.
  • It is effective against Candida.
  • It is excellent for healthy bones, joints and different forms of arthritis.
  • Boron supplementation increases testosterone (converts testosterone to DHT) and estrogen (converts E1 to E2 to E3).
  • It converts Vitamin D to its active form.
  • It normalizes Hormones
  • It improves vision, psoriasis, balance, memory, heart challenges, and cognition issues.
  • It detoxifies fluoride, chloride, and bromide.
  • It decalcifies the pineal gland and detoxifies the body of heavy metals.
  • It kills Dermadex mites, which are responsible for acne.
  • It reduces inflammation in the gut.
  • It makes vitamins more bio-available.
  • Boron increases cognition and healthy brain function. Not advisable to take before you go to sleep.

The parathyroid controls the calcium levels in your body. If the parathyroid is low in boron, it takes calcium out of the bones and creates deposits in the body causing arthritis and osteoporosis.

Dosage

Walter Last, a retired biochemist, wrote the article ‘The Borax Conspiracy – How the Arthritis Cure has been Stopped.’ In this article he recommends the following protocol:

Arthritis Protocol:

Not advisable to take before you go to sleep.

Dissolve one teaspoon (25 – 30 mg of borax provides 3-5 mg of boron) of borax in one liter of water. This is your concentrated solution.

Standard Dose: Take one teaspoon of the concentrate with food. You may take a second dose if you have no side effects from the first dose. Use this if you have no health issues.

Walter Last recommended for those who have problems with arthritis, body stiffness, low sex drive, and hormone production to increase your dosage to three times per day for several months or until you feel your challenge is minimal and no more.

I’ve been taking one tablespoon of the concentrate a day and recently increased my dosage to two tablespoons or 20 milligrams a day. Dr. Jorge D. Flechas, MD, MPH, IAMT recommends 30-75 milligrams/day. I was diagnosed with osteopenia and an unreactive thyroid, so I’m hoping that Borax will support both of these conditions.

For Candida, other fungi and mycoplasmas, removing fluoride from the body and decalcifying the pineal gland:

Low Dose: low body weight, 100 mg or 1/8 teaspoon of borax powder or 500 mg.

Medium Dose: weighty individuals or more pervasive Candida: 200 ml or a ¼ teaspoon of borax powder or 1,000 mg.

High Dose: for substantial fungal, Candida problems, autoimmune diseases, cancer, and dementia: take a half teaspoon or 2,000 mg Borax powder mixed with food.

Each dose should be taken with meals. Take borax for five days a week and then give your body a rest for two days.

Borax can lower your magnesium level, so it’s essential to take additional magnesium. The recommended dose is 400-600 mg of magnesium or until you get loose stools.

Side Effects

If you notice any side effects, reduce or stop your dosage for a few days and then slowly increase until you have the desired dosage.

If you take too much borax, it can cause an upset stomach and even diarrhea. It may also detoxify the body too quickly, so it’s advisable to start slow and build up your intake. The common side effect is the Herxheimer reaction, which is dying off from Candida. Make sure you drink plenty of water to flush toxins from your body.

Salt Loading Protocol

If you are experiencing detoxification symptoms, you may want to consider this salt loading protocol to assist with the elimination process.

Dissolve a half teaspoon of Celtic sea salt in half cup of warm water and drink. Follow it up with 12 oz of filtered water. Repeat for every thirty minutes until urination begins. Salt helps to eliminate the bromide in the bloodstream.

You can also take milk thistle and dandelion root extract or tea to help detox the liver of toxins.

Foot soak to remove toxins in the body

I love this detox foot soak and have to give Justine Iannello Haynes, Nutritional Consultant, credit for this recipe.

  • 2 Tablespoon of Borax, an essential element
  • 2 Tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar, high in potassium
  • 2 Tablespoon of Epsom Salt, to fight inflammation and restore magnesium
  • 2 Drops of DMSO, to make everything more available in the system
  • Orange Essential Oil, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial

Mix all together without DMSO in warm purified water. Just before you put your feet in then add DMSO. Then soak for thirty minutes.  Wash your feet before you place them in the water. If you don’t wash your feet beforehand, the DMSO will bring any impurities you have on your feet into your body. Here is the link to Justine’s YouTube video for further instructions.

Simple Foot Soak

Mix the following ingredients with purified water and soak for thirty minutes. You may add essential oil, such as lavender oil, for a relaxing effect.

  • 1 cup of Epsom salt
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • 1 Tablespoon of boron
  • Several drops of essential oil
