Medications, Drugs : National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

In this week’s episode of The Dr. Ardis Show, Dr. Bryan Ardis celebrates his new favorite day of the year – National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Held on the last Saturday of every April and October, this DEA-supported program allows Americans to safely dispose of unused and expired prescription medications at thousands of collection sites nationwide. In 2026, the event falls on April 25th, 10am–2pm.

Dr. Ardis reveals that over 10,196 tons of prescription drugs have been collected since the program began, then walks through the top 10 most prescribed drugs in America – including Lipitor, Levothyroxine, Metformin, and Lisinopril – breaking down what each is prescribed for and what the research says about their risks. He shares peer-reviewed data linking statin drugs to increased cancer risk, particularly in women and the elderly, and highlights major pharmaceutical class action settlements from Pfizer, Merck, and Bayer. He also covers currently litigated drugs with active lawsuits, including Ozempic, Depo-Provera, Zoloft, and Zantac.

The episode closes with how collected drugs are destroyed – incinerated at 2,000°F at waste-to-energy facilities – and a call to help set a new record in 2026.
