About 3 years ago, I started researching holistic remedies for thyroid support, and I kept seeing the same pattern over and over again in ordinary people, friends, family, and stories online…
People with normal thyroid tests were still exhausted. Mental fog. Cold hands and feet. Weight gain. Sinuses that never cleared.
Doctors said everything looked fine and handed over the usual options: eat less, move more, or take medication for life.
Something felt off, so I looked up the raw materials that the thyroid needs for optimal function.
Iodine came up, and the answer was always the same: “most people get enough from iodized salt.”
That sounded off at first.
Iodine is not an ordinary mineral
Every cell uses it. Breast tissue, ovaries, prostate, skin, brain, gut lining, they all have dedicated ways to concentrate it.
When levels stay low for years, those tissues don’t just “function a bit less.” They run short of a regulatory signal they were built around.
That didn’t make sense with the story I’d been told. Iodized salt solved the problem decades ago. Goiters disappeared. Case closed.
Not quite.
How We Ended Up Iodine-Deficient Again
Two chemicals started competing for the same receptors iodine uses.
Fluoride shows up in most tap water and commercial toothpastes.
Bromide shows up in commercial baked goods, many pesticides, and flame-retardant chemicals used in furniture and electronics.
Your cells cannot easily tell these apart from iodine.
When fluoride or bromide binds to a receptor first, iodine has nowhere to go. It gets displaced and eventually excreted.
This is basic biochemistry.
It means even a modest intake can be partially neutralized before it does its job.
Preventing the worst outcome is not the same as producing the best one.
NHANES data shows median urinary iodine levels in the United States dropped by roughly 50 percent between the early 1970s and the late 1980s/early 1990s.
The proportion of pregnant women with low iodine levels rose sharply over the same period. Pregnant women need more iodine, not less. That shift received relatively little mainstream attention.
What Iodine Does Beyond the Thyroid
One of the first things people notice when they start taking iodine is that their nose starts running.
This is not a side effect.
Iodine increases respiratory secretion and reduces its viscosity. That is why potassium iodide was an FDA-approved expectorant for decades for the symptomatic treatment of chronic pulmonary diseases where tenacious mucus complicates the problem — bronchial asthma, bronchitis, emphysema.
Mucus that moves freely traps pathogens, lubricates tissue, and clears waste.
Mucus that sits stagnant, thickened, stuck, or hardened stops being protective and becomes a liability. Pathogenic bacteria, parasites, and fungi prefer low-oxygen, mucus-clogged environments.
The same pattern shows up in multiple places:
Sinuses — chronic congestion, pressure headaches, reduced oxygen to the brain, persistent mental fog
Lungs — reduced capacity, chronic cough, vulnerability to respiratory infections
Gut lining — a thickened mucosal layer that blocks nutrient absorption and shelters parasites
Colon — compacted buildup that slows transit, feeds harmful bacteria, and drives inflammation
Lymphatic system — slow lymph drainage, allowing cellular waste to accumulate in tissue
Reproductive organs — contributing factors in conditions like PCOS and endometriosis
Ear canals — associated with chronic ear infections and fluid pressure
*When the raw material arrives, the body starts thinning and moving secretions that may have been sitting for months or years.
*Many people report that brain fog clears right after they take iodine.
That connects directly to improved airflow, reduced sinus pressure, and better oxygen delivery to the brain.
*At the gut level, the same process helps dissolve the thick mucus that coats the wall, disrupts the protected habitat that parasites depend on, and allows the microbiome to begin rebalancing.
*Iodine’s antiparasitic and antimicrobial effects reinforce this. It selectively targets pathogenic organisms while largely sparing beneficial gut flora.
Many people who have struggled with bloating, bad digestion, or unexplained food sensitivities for years see improvement not from a probiotic, but simply from clearing the environment that harmful organisms had been thriving in.
Iodine also supports normal cell turnover in tissues that concentrate it.
Not all iodine products supply the same thing
The thyroid primarily uses potassium iodide. Breast tissue, ovaries, prostate, and skin preferentially absorb molecular iodine. A product that only contains one form leaves entire organ systems under-supplied.
Lugol’s combines both elemental iodine and potassium iodide in water
That combination has been used for nearly two centuries, first as a surgical prep and antiseptic, later recognized for broader effects. Different tissues get what they prefer.
Single-form products or heavily marketed “nascent” versions do not automatically cover the same ground, and the price difference is often hard to justify once you look at the actual iodine content delivered.
Lugol’s remains the practical standard for people who want both forms
Take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, mixed into a full glass of water.
Distilled or spring water is preferable because it avoids competing halogens.
The taste is earthy and slightly metallic. Most people get used to it. If it bothers you at first, dilute it in a larger volume of water.
At a 25 mg dose, most people tolerate it well and begin noticing positive changes quickly.
Drink 2–3 liters of water daily.
A small amount of baking soda in water helps the kidneys flush bromide more efficiently and speeds the process along.
If symptoms feel stronger than expected, stay at that dose longer rather than increasing. Discomfort is usually a sign you moved faster than your elimination pathways could keep up with, not a sign that iodine is wrong for you.
Most people notice early shifts within two to four weeks:
clearer sinuses
more consistent morning energy
better digestion
less afternoon fatigue
better skin
Hormonal improvements in women typically appear around the six-to-ten-week mark. Real cognitive shifts often emerge around week eight.
