N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC) is a strong antioxidant amino acid and acts as a precursor to the crucial antioxidant glutathione in the body.  Glutathione applies numerous preventive effects, involving detoxification and intra-cellular defense to combat oxidative stress.
Substances well known to lower glutathione levels are the drug known as acetaminophen and also  alcohol.
