On April 25, 2022, right at the start of the backyard barbecue season, over 120,000lbs of ground beef sold between February 1st and April 8th have been recalled due to “possible E. coli O103 contamination“.

And then just two days later on April 27, 2022, a “Public Health Alert” was issued by the USDA “due to concerns that specific ground beef products may be adulterated with E. coli O26.” The USDA released the information as an alert – rather than a recall – only because the products aren’t available to be purchased anymore…but obviously unsuspecting folks might have some of this beef lurking in their freezers!

Just in 2022 alone, the USDA has already reported 3 alerts (the 2 current mentioned above and 1 closed as of writing this article) and in 2021, the CDC reported 4 outbreaks relating to E. coli food poisoning bacteria in the US food supply.

Unfortunately, E. coli infections are responsible for hospitalizing an average of 2,000 Americans each year, with an alarming 60 of those 2,000 dying from either the infection or its related complications.

Needless to say, contamination in the US food supply still happens, and E. coli infections can be very serious. According to the FDA:

“People infected with pathogenic E. coli can start to notice symptoms anywhere from a few days after consuming contaminated food or as much as nine days later. Generally, the symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting.

The severity or presence of certain symptoms may depend on the type of pathogenic E. coli causing the infection. Some infections can cause severe bloody diarrhea and lead to life-threatening conditions, such as a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), or the development of high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, and neurologic problems. Other infections may have no symptoms or may resolve without medical treatment within five to seven days.

Due to the range in severity of illness, people should consult their health care provider if they suspect that they have developed symptoms that resemble a(n) E. coli infection.

…. People of any age can become infected with pathogenic E. coli. Children under the age of 5 years, adults older than 65, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop severe illness as a result of an E. coli infection. However, even healthy older children and young adults can become seriously ill.

…. Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), including E. coli O157:H7, can be particularly dangerous. The primary sources of STEC outbreaks are raw or undercooked ground meat products, raw milk and cheeses, and contaminated vegetables and sprouts.”

7 Clinical Studies Demonstrate Silver Kills E. coli

Here’s the good news: There are at least seven different clinical studies demonstrating the effectiveness of silver-based products – including plain old colloidal silver – against E. coli.

1) The Effect Of Silver Ions On The Respiratory Chain Of Escherichia Coli

In this clinical study, conducted by the Department of Biochemistry at the University of British Columbia, and published in the Canadian Journal of Microbiology, researchers demonstrated that silver ions inhibit the respiratory chain of E. coli, effectively killing the pathogen. This study was conducted in 1974, meaning medical science has known about the effectiveness of silver against E. coli for over 45 years!

2) A Mechanistic Study of the Antibacterial Effects of Silver Ions on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus

In this 1999 clinical study, conducted by the Department of Biological Science and Biotechnology at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, researchers discovered that one of the most powerful ways silver ions destroy pathogens like E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus is by attaching to the DNA of the pathogen and preventing it from replicating. No replication, no infection!

3) Antibacterial Activity and Mechanism of Action of the Silver Ion in Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli

In this 2008 clinical study, researchers from Department of Microbiology and KRF Zoonotic Disease Priority Research Institute at Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea, found that electrically generated silver ions cause significant reductions in bacterial counts of E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and that even the pathogens that survive exposure to silver ions become “non-cultivable,” meaning they are no longer able to reproduce, and eventually die. Of course, if they can’t reproduce, they can’t infect.

4) Antibacterial Efficacy Studies of Silver Nanoparticles Against Escherichia coli ATCC-15224

Here’s a 2006 clinical study demonstrating that silver nanoparticles dramatically reduce E. coli bacterial counts. The study showed that the silver nanoparticles not only adhered to the cell walls of the E. coli microbes, but also penetrated the cell walls resulting in death of the microorganisms. The researchers concluded the deaths of the E. coli pathogens were ultimately caused by the release of silver ions from the silver nanoparticles.

5) Colloidal Silver As a New Antimicrobial Agent

In this clinical study, published in the International Journal of Biological Research in 2010, it was found that colloidal silver exhibited “powerful antimicrobial activity” against multi-drug resistant pathogens including E. coliStaphylococcus aureusPseudomonas aregnosa and Salmonella typhi. The study authors state that colloidal silver showed antibacterial activity “against all tested pathogens.”

6) Antibacterial Efficacy of Colloidal Silver Alone and in Combination With Other Antibiotics on Isolates from Wound Infections

In this 2007 clinical study, conducted by researchers from the Department of Applied Microbiology at Ebonyi State University in Abakaliki, Nigeria, it was found that even low dose colloidal silver kills antibiotic-resistant E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus pathogens, whether used alone or used in conjunction with prescription antibiotics. The study also found that colloidal silver does not interfere with therapeutic efficacy of the prescription antibiotics tested, but in many cases enhances their effectiveness!

7) Bactericidal effect of silver nanoparticles against multidrug-resistant bacteria (including E. coli)

In this 2010 study, published in the World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology [(2010) 26:615-621], clinical researchers challenged different drug-resistant pathogens, including E. coli O157:H7, with silver nanoparticles. They found that the silver nanoparticles inactivated both drug-resistant and drug-susceptible bacteria (Gram positive and Gram negative), through a powerful bactericidal mechanism, and actually began inhibiting the bacterial growth rate from the very first moment of contact between the bacteria and the silver nanoparticles.

Silver-Based Antimicrobials like Colloidal Silver are Highly Effective Against E. Coli and Food Poisoning!

As you can clearly see, colloidal silver, silver nanoparticles and silver ions have been clinically demonstrated to be highly effective against E. coli – including multi-drug-resistant strains of the pathogen!

In other words, silver-based antimicrobials ROCK against E. coli – even the deadly drug-resistant forms! The research is conclusive.

What’s more, according to the Wall Street Journal (June 6, 2006), in an article titled “The War Against Germs Has a Silver Lining,” silver has indeed been demonstrated to kill foodborne pathogens such as E. coli:

“Silver, in the form of a metal or as dissolved ions, fights microorganisms by interfering with processes such as how they breathe and reproduce. Tests show that silver ions kill microorganisms ranging from harmful strains of E. coli that cause food-borne diseases to the staphylococcus bacteria responsible for serious infections.”

Furthermore, for centuries people from developing nations such as India have regularly consumed small amounts of silver along with their foods as a means of preventing food-borne infection and disease. As Keith Moeller of American Biotech Labs points out in a white paper titled “The Safety of Using Silver Solutions and the Risk of Argyria”:

“It is estimated that the Indian tradition of eating candy and cakes wrapped in metallic silver foil (eaten foil and all) came from their historically gained knowledge that in their warm, moist climate with little refrigeration of foods, eating the silver-covered candy and cakes after meals would kill the bacteria consumed with the food, before it had a chance to do damage to their body systems.”

And as Dr. Nenah Sylver, Ph.D. has stated in her book The Rife Handbook“…colloidal silver traveling directly to a relatively empty gut, with no stool to block its passage, can kill unwanted microorganisms there that cause food poisoning and dysentery.”

So there’s little doubt of the ability of colloidal silver to kill food poisoning pathogens like E. coli, including some of the most virulent ones. The question is, can it do so in the human body?

In Conclusion…

I hope you find these real-life anecdotal accounts helpful, keeping in mind of course that “testimonials” are not the equivalent of medical evidence, and should never be relied on in place of direction and guidance from your medical doctor or other licensed physician.

And that goes double when food poisoning or E. coli infection is suspected, since severe cases can be deadly.

In my own case, I ended up with a nasty bout with food poisoning several years back after cooking and eating a bowl of soup from a can of soup that had previously been stored in a food cabinet in the garage for several months during the hot summer heat.

When the severe stomach cramping hit several hours after eating the soup, I immediately drank three ounces of 20 ppm colloidal silver. This caused my body to do a severe “flush” (i.e., a polite term for diarrhea) three times in a row, over the course of the next two hours as the silver began killing the food poisoning pathogens.

After the ‘flushing’ ended, I took seven capsules of Lactobacillus acidophilus to help prevent any of the food poisoning pathogens left from re-colonizing my digestive tract. That’s called “competitive inhibition,” a healing technique for food poisoning that I learned from nutritional supplement expert George Foss.

By the next day, I was feeling more or less back to normal, and happy that my time at the commode was quite limited compared to past food poisoning episodes when colloidal silver was unavailable.
