Baobab – bountiful health benefits

What are Adaptogens? *
Adaptogens are naturally occurring, non-toxic substances that can help protect your body from stress by stabilizing and optimizing a host of physiological functions.
The name comes from their ability to adapt to whatever your body specifically needs to restore you to peak health.

Adaptogenic properties of Baobab
When your body is stressed, it produces the hormones adrenaline and cortisol. Too much of these hormones, too often, can degrade your health; chronic inflammation, depression, mood swings, digestive problems, heart disease and insomnia. What makes adaptogens so remarkable is they can help defend against these damaging effects of stress by regulating the release of stress hormones and protecting your adrenals—no matter the underlying cause of said stress.

Baobab Fruit Powder and the immune system
is known to help boost the immune system.
Baobab has an extremely high antioxidant profile.
Antioxidants are substances that may protect cells in your body from free radical damage that can occur from exposure to certain chemicals, smoking, pollution, radiation, and as a byproduct of normal metabolism.

Baobab Fruit Powder is a rich source. Vitamin C,
With six times more vitamin C than oranges,
We can’t store it in the body, which means we need it from our diet every day.
Vitamin C helps protect cells and keeps them healthy.
It is also involved in the production of collagen, which is important for the support and structure of all connective tissues in the body.
It can help with wound healing and increases our ability to absorb Iron.

Baobab has double the iron content of spinach.
Iron has a role in creating energy from nutrients.
It also contributes to the transmission of nerve impulses — the signals that coordinate the actions of different parts of your body.
If you have more iron than is needed, it’s stored in your body for future use.
Without healthy levels of iron, the red blood cells cannot effectively provide oxygen to cells and tissues.
Symptoms of anemia include: fatigue, weakness, dizziness and difficulty concentrating.

Other essential minerals
that Baobab is high in are Potassium, Magnesium and Zinc.
Potassium deficiency can generate psychological effects and can contribute towards stress-inducing conditions such as mood swings, depression and lethargy.
Magnesium is considered by many doctors to be the most critical and vital mineral needed for managing and coping with stress.
Low levels of zinc can exacerbate stress levels.

Baobab, Diabetes and Glycemic Index
Research has shown that when consumed with simple carbohydrates, it will slow their glycemic response.
Baobab essentially lowers the GI of high GI foods such as white bread!
By slowing the glycemic response of simple carbohydrates, the findings indicate that baobab fruit powder could potentially help in the management of obesity and type 2 diabetes. It is thought that specific groups of antioxidants called polyphenols contained in baobab fruit powder are responsible for this effect.

Glycemic Index (GI)
Our body’s “glycemic” response to a food is the measure of the effect it has on our blood sugar levels after eating.
Persistent fluctuations in blood sugar levels can lead to health problems such as type 2 diabetes.
Unfortunately when the body receives more glucose than it can use, it stores the excess sugar which it is unable to metabolize, as fat.
That is why eating foods which promote rapid and elevated blood sugar levels such as white bread, confectionery and white rice can often lead to weight gain.

In a 2013 clinical study, researchers at Oxford Brookes University in England discovered that drinking a mix of baobab fruit powder and water significantly slowed the rise of blood sugar levels 20-60 minutes after eating high GI white bread. (SA Coe et al. “The polyphenol-rich baobab fruit reduces starch digestion and glycemic response in humans”. Nutrition Research. 2013 Nov; 33[11]:888-96)
Subjects were given drinks containing either (1) 18.5g of baobab fruit powder in 250ml of water or (2) 37g of baobab fruit powder in 250ml of water. Both groups recorded lower and slower blood sugar increases after eating high GI white bread compared to the group that was given just plain water. It is thought that specific groups of antioxidants called polyphenols contained in baobab fruit powder are responsible for this effect.

Prebiotics
are specialized plant fibers that beneficially nourish the probiotic “good” bacteria already in the large intestine or colon, such as Bifidobacteri, Lattobacilli and Clostridi.
While probiotics introduce good bacteria into the gut, prebiotics act as a fertilizer for the good bacteria that’s already there.
They help with good bacteria growth, improving the good-to-bad bacteria ratio.
This ratio has been shown to have a direct correlation to your health and overall wellbeing, from your stomach to your brain.
Prebiotic fiber is found in many fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately the minute amounts of soluble fiber in most of these foods make ingesting enough fiber extremely difficult.
Ingesting enough fiber in sufficient quantities is often difficult, however a daily additive of Baobab allows you to achieve optimum results.
